## Natural gas drive systems as a sustainable alternative

Due to the climate change and the resulting [reorientation towards alternative and therefore less environmentally harmful propulsion systems](/alternative-drive-systems/), [research and development](/engine-development/) in the field of **natural gas (CNG) driven engines** have gained significantly in importance.

### Compressed natural gas (CNG) as alternative fuel

**Gas fuelled drive systems** are particularly useful for:

- Passenger cars (**natural gas cars**)
- Public transportation
- Natural gas-powered commercial vehicles
- Industrial applications

We are convinced by the **sustainability potential of gas engines (CNG)**.  For that reason, we have made research & development in the field of gas engines one of our important areas of focus.

Based on our [experience with the COSMOZ project](/projects/project-archive/cosmoz-natural-gas-cng-driven-engines/), [BTD](/about-us/) has continuously been awarded new contracts by the automotive industry since 2012 for the **further development of CNG engines**.
