## Cutting CO2 emissions by reducing fuel consumption and friction

**Vehicle emissions in internal combustion engines** are subject to increasingly strict legislation. In order to comply with the emission standards, it is not sufficient to [develop new combustion methods](/engine-development/); research into new **alternative lubricants and fuels** is also required.

Lubricants, for example, will have a huge CO2 saving potential in the future, due to a reduction in friction and losses.

## Oils, lubricants & fuels

- **Liquid fuels:** petrol, diesel, rapeseed oil, methanol
- **Gaseous fuels:** [natural gas](/alternative-drive-systems/cng-engines/) (CNG)
- Oils and **lubricants**
