EU project IPCEI Hydrogen: BTD as associated partner with its Project H2ITC (Hydrogen Independent Test Centre)

Construction work on our new test centre H2ITC has finally begun.

For some time now, we have been expanding our existing test centre, and IC-engine developments for hydrogen operation tests have already been successfully completed. Our newly developed, project-specific 1-cylinder test engine is also about to be commissioned. After lengthy delays in obtaining all permits, it is finally time: Construction work for our new test centre has begun.

The energy transition to low-carbon or even CO2 neutral drives require a differentiated and complementary energy mix with innovative solutions.

With the support of the Walloon Region, the contribution of BTD in the creation of this new H2 value chain consists in the building of an independent test centre for H2 powertrain technologies, including the possibility for testing E-Fuels and Fuel Cells.  This also includes the development and construction of prototype engines as well as sub-components.

The new test centre

The new facility enables testing of drivetrains under ambient (up to 1MW) and harsh conditions, including altitude and temperatures as low as -30°C. Additionally, it allows testing of components beyond automotive applicationsThe project also includes the development and construction of 2 new research IC-engines, specially designed for testing with H2 and E-fuels.

BTD helps also in components development of drive train solutions.

The objective of the project consists in being prepared in developing and testing solutions for the new challenges of the transport sector and for other industrial applications, in their effort, to bring CO2 neutral drives to the market.

By providing independent test capacity to Ipcei Partners, but also Universities, Start-ups, SMES, OEM’s or any other institution, BTD can support the development of their products without requiring them to invest in dedicated development or testing equipment.   With these new service offerings, BTD expand its expertise, helping to achieve specific practical goals. A long-term objective is to establish a reference laboratory.

The new test centre will be annexed to the existing company building, located in the industrial estate of MALMEDY, - approx. 500 m from the motorway, providing direct connections to Germany, The Netherlands, France and Luxembourg.
